Business information systems help increase productivity, improve customer service and provide greater data security. By using them, companies can better control supply chains and guard against shortages of inventory needed to sustain production. They also don't need to analyze the content of regulations, as many of these types of programs (such as accounting applications) are continuously adapted to current changes in the law. Not surprisingly, digitization is gaining more and more recognition in the eyes of Polish entrepreneurs as well.

Business applications in Polish companies

According to data collected by IDC analysts, interest in IT systems for managing business operations has been steadily growing in our country for two years now (2020 - 2021). This process was initiated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and 2021 brought a clear acceleration of digital transformation in many companies. IDC estimates that the value of the Polish business application market then amounted to $333.6 million, up 8.5 percent from a year earlier.

Why do entrepreneurs invest in IT systems? They mainly care about maintaining continuity of operations and protecting themselves against unforeseen risks. For this reason, companies are buying software to manage logistics, supply chains and production. ERP systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies are also popular. Businesses are using them to automate sales and finance and accounting processes, customer relations, service requests or complaints.

The IDC report also notes the growing interest in solutions working on the basis of the cloud computing model. In the latter case, private cloud systems continue to lead the way, accounting for 67 percent of investments in 2021. Importantly, however, before the pandemic, this value was 76 percent, which means that businesses are becoming less and less afraid of putting their data in the hands of third-party IT service providers.

Tactics of small steps

However, the purchase of sophisticated IT systems and the necessary infrastructure often exceeds the financial capabilities of many companies in the SME sector. In view of this, do they have to give up the implementation of modern software at their premises? Not necessarily. A good way to start the process of digitization is to launch uncomplicated applications that allow handling the most basic business processes, such as accounting and administrative activities or document circulation.
